Afraid You Can’t Fit Science Into Your Homeschool? Audiobooks Are The Secret Solution!

November 01, 2017 3 min read

Audiobooks - we love them! And thankfully, we are not alone!!

Audiobooks are a great way to enjoy a book without having to actually sit down and read said book.

But did you know that a good science-related audiobook can fill in for you when you voice has gone kaput? Or when you just can't fit in enough hours in the day to do the important things like laundry?

Today, on the day of the release of The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 5: Geology audiobook, we have invited Paige to come back to the SassySci blog to share with you all how she fits in science with our audiobooks!

Audiobooks Are The Secret Science Solution

Afraid you can't fit science into your homeschool? Audiobooks are the secret science solution!

Like many homeschooling families, we are busy. Our days are packed with things we need to do and not enough time to do them in. So until Uncle Cecil figures out how to fit more hours in my day, I use audiobooks!

Here are five times I pull out the iPod and speaker instead of the actual book:

#1 - We listen while I prepare lunch.

I don't know about folks at your house, but around here we get hangry (hungry = angry). Lunch needs to be served promptly and it won't wait for that science lesson to be finished first. So on those days when we are running late and our afternoon is already packed, I'll put on the audiobook so we can finish science and lunch at the same time. It's a great way to multi-task!

#2 - We listen to catch up when we are behind.

Life gets in the way of homeschool sometimes and we find ourselves needing to read two full chapters in one day. The prospect of reading 40+ pages out loud in one shot does not thrill me. So if we are behind in our plans, I let the audiobook do the reading for me! It's a great way to catch up without killing my voice!

#3 - We listen while I run.

Right now, hubs and I are training for a 10K, which requires 30+ minutes of running at a time. It can be hard to fit that time in while homeschooling. So, I pull put on the audiobook as I run nearby on the treadmill. It's a great way to fit in some read-aloud time as I train for our race.

#4 - We listen as we build together.

Sometimes my voice is gone or sometimes I just don't feel like reading aloud<-just keeping it real! On those days, I pop in the audiobook and pull out the blocks. We sit on the floor building together as we listen to an audiobook. It's a great way to fit in some mommy-and-me time as we listen to science!

#5 - We listen during rest time.

We try to have a rest time after lunch and during these times, our kids can play quietly in their rooms. I love to let them listen to audiobooks at rest time and I have been known to put on the same chapter or book we read the previous week. It's a great way to use audiobooks as a bit of review!

I love to read aloud to my kids, but the honest truth is that sometimes I don't have the time or the voice to do so. And when that happens, I use audiobooks to fill in the gaps.

Wrapping It Up

See, audiobooks are Paige's not-so-secret {anymore} science solution! If you want a few audiobooks to get started with, here is a link to all of ours:

Enjoy your earbud adventures!!
