How you can celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day with science at home today

Learn the science behind the perfect grilled cheese and get directions for your own grilled cheese experiment!

It’s National Grilled Cheese Day and we are celebrating this wonderful holiday with science!!

I know, your thinking – Blaine and Tracey, what the heck do grilled cheese sandwiches, science, and your living books have in common?

It’s really rather simple – we love grilled cheese sandwiches and we have a living book series, plus today is National Grilled Cheese Day and we are going to celebrate it with a grilled cheese experiment.

See, we told the connection was simple and obvious . . . sort of . . .

Let’s dig into our plans!

How to celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day with Science

Did you even know that today was National Grilled Cheese Day?

Well, you can thank us for letting you know. And we have Uncle Cecil to thank for making us aware of this random holiday. In fact, he loves to celebrate all kinds of crazy holiday, like National Scavenger Hunt Day and World Guacamole Day. It really makes life very interesting!

This year, we are kicking off our grilled cheese celebrations by watching this video about the science of the perfect grilled cheese.

The Grilled Cheese Experiment

After we watch the video, we are going to test our grilled cheese making skills with an experiment. It’s a very scientific process to determine our families perfect grilled cheese.

And in honor of today’s holiday, we are going to share the process with you!

You will need the following:

  • Bread (white, wheat, multigrain, or sourdough – just select two of your favorites)
  • Cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or processed slices – again just select two of your favorites)
  • Butter (you could also use margarine)
  • Dijon mustard (this is optional but awesome!!)
  • Pan and stove

How to get started:

  1. Take a moment to come up with a few combination options of grilled cheese sandwiches you can make with what you have.
  2. Slice up your selected cheeses and heat up your pan to medium heat.
  3. Butter your bread and place the two buttered sides together.
  4. Spread a bit of dijon mustard of the slice of bread facing up. You could also use pesto or your favorite spread to spice things up a bit, or just skip this step altogether!
  5. Lay out our cheese to cover the entire piece of bread – very important step as you want full melty cheese coverage.
  6. Now, gently remove the top slice of bread and place it buttered side down in the pan. Cover it with the other slice of bread, buttered side up.
  7. Let it cook for a few minutes until golden brown and the cheese has started to melt.
  8. Flip the sandwich over and let the other side cook until golden brown.
  9. Repeat steps 3 to 8 with your other bread and cheese selections
  10. Slice them all up and serve!

Let everyone taste each of the grilled cheeses and then choose which one you all think is the best!
